In our last sale, while the French Indian Settlements came under great demand, the collections at the front were largely left high and dry. Now that they have had the usual reduction, a bid of 80% may secure a fine lot at a very good price. This sale includes quite a bit of Saar which is one of those "French" areas sometimes forgotten. Yet its history and stamp designs are quite different from most others and have an attraction of their own. The earlier issues reflect the intensive industrialism of the region while the middle period has that Germanic Art Deco/Jugendstil influence in its designs. Other additions I remember this month were to French Sudan, Morocco, Guinea, Tangier, Indo-China and Benin. At the time of writing this, we southerners are enduring the Arctic conditions down here in Sussex. Although very unusual for us to see snow on the ground, it takes us back fondly to our years spent in Shropshire where we lived high on the moors and became used to being snowed in at times. Hopefully, things will have warmed up by the time this catalogue appears.
